Santa Barbara School of Performing Arts (SB SOPA) was founded by Dauri Kennedy in 2012. Formerly Big Stage Productions, SB SOPA offers pre-professional training for area youth ages 5-21. The conservatory exists to nurture, motivate and build confidence in our community’s youth through the use of contemporary and classic theatrical works. We celebrate the theatre as a place that furthers on-stage talents, but also allows emotional, intellectual and physical growth. We provide an outlet for inclusion, team building and goal setting through singing, dance and acting/public speaking. Four "tracks" are offered, determined by age and audition. Plays change for each session. Please see "Schedule" for the names of this session's works.
DEBUT TRACK: (Ages 5-7) Welcome to SOPA! Debut Track is designed to introduce youngsters to the performing arts. Our instructors lead the students in learning how to learn – how to audition, learn a melody, understand how to use and memorize a script, how to pick up dance moves, and how to work together as a cast to put up a show! Material is always age appropriate and fun! Please see the schedule for this semesters rehearsal times.
INTERMEZZO TRACK: (Ages 8-10) A new track this semester! Intermezzo is for the advanced Debut student who is ready for more responsibility in the next level. Students in this track should have a solid understanding in how to learn music, are proficient in picking up dance steps, and are ready to get creative and make their own characters! Material is challenging, but maintains a high level of fun. Please see the schedule for this semesters rehearsal times.
RISING STAR TRACK: (Ages 11-13) Students in the Rising Star Track are at a very special time in their development, and we believe they need to be treated with individualized support. Rising Star track is focused on enhancing and honing performing skills, while raising the bar in terms of rehearsal etiquette. Classes and rehearsals are more detail oriented, and Repertoire expectations are introduced. Material is chosen to give the most stage time to as many kids as possible, and to teach more stylized genres. Please see the schedule for this semesters rehearsal times.
REPERTOIRE TRACK: (Ages 14-21) Repertoire Track is for the advanced, dedicated musical theater student. Students in the Repertoire Track are held to a high standard of rehearsal etiquette and are expected to set an example for the younger tracks. Rep students should always come prepared, on time, and ready to rehearse with all materials (script, pencil, recording device, proper attire). Material is more mature, and performance venues are professional and innovative. Students should be prepared for a pre-professional experience. Please see the schedule for this semesters rehearsal times.
